New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced a $10.4 million effort to improve Long Island's water quality and strengthen the economies and resiliency of coastal communities by restoring native shellfish populations to coastal waters. In order to restore shellfish, New York State is expanding public shellfish hatcheries in Suffolk and Nassau counties through a dedicated grant program; and is establishing five new sanctuary sites in the two counties to transplant seeded clams and oysters.
